Marco dos Santos Pina for his design "Bhocker" a rather radical reduction to the basic functions of a stool. The jury has been impressed by this design be it in terms of its ecological footprint, functionality and estethics. Especially for non permament use (easy to stow, light to carry around, ..) this stool offers a perfect solution for public areas like museums or events like workshops as well as often needed additional seats in private accomodations.

Lukas Franciskiewicz for his design that has no name yet. Lukas Franciskiewicz has impressed the jury by his consistent advocacy for craftmanship in its best tradition as a consequence of the local context he has been working with in and around the Kiel University. This very comfortable stool achieved by a combination of skilled carpenters work and leather application carries forward the tradition of some of the most inspiring pieces of design work from the 20th century and combines it with the targets of the green design movement.

The first 220 visitors, those who saw the exhibition before the announcement of the winners, had the chance to vote for someone’s personal favourite:
This price goes to Nikolas Heep for his work “Come BackAfrica”. A very aesthetic suggestion, turned out of a solid piece of wood. A seating sculpture with a touch of irony, a delighting enrichment for the ambience of every design aficionado.
All other awards will be published soon.
And last but not least, many thanks to each and every contributor and a special thanks to the jury for the great work!

Just back from Berlin I want to show you some stools from young designers shown at the DMY Berlin. There is the cloud designed by Joon & Jung - what a feeling to relax on such a cloud. Jeongseob Kim presented a stool one is surprised how comfortable you can sit on it. Gruba Design Studio from Argentine presented their version of a cardboard stool, enforced by some plastic. Lienehuis from Arnhem in the Netherlands surprised with their creation "BUM". Those animal like stools are handmade out of fabric filled with hard foam. Each one really has its own personality.
Feel Inspired!

I just received from Eames Demetrios, Director of the Eames Foundation, some images of Billy Wilders African Stool. The type of stool is well known as stool from Luba people of the Congo.
Feel inspired!

I have received the following impressions by Andrea Itzinger. More of her work you can find on her website www.andrea-itzinger.at. I pressume the pictures stem from Mali or one of the neighbouring countries. Thank you, Andrea!
By the way there is a lady in South Africa, Ronel Jordaan, who does stools that resemble very much stones, out of felted wool. Below you find a n image of her work as well.

Visiting Marrakech we found a very interesting version of the classical Senufo stool, a very slim and elegant version with some ornaments. And another inspiring stool as well.

Today a very interesting question concerning the forthcoming design competition has been raised. Do participants need to send in design sketches or prototypes? Let me open a discussion about this issue. The competition to be launched in February 2010 wants to invite designers from all around the world to particpate. This means we have to level the prerequisites to a common standard that makes it easy for designers from developing countries to participate as well. Some of them might not have access to modern design software, others might have problems to manufacturse prototypes. Almost certain many might have a problem to send in prototypes due to cost. The question is how to set standards fair to each and everybody.
Please post your ideas. All contribution concerning this topic will be tagged with the term"fair competition". This means you can select all relevant contributions just by searching for contributions tagged accordingly.
